President Donald Trump signed a new executive order today imposing steep country-wide tariffs on India because the country continues to buy oil from Russia. Trump said he will place similar tariffs on other countries that purchase Russian oil. The president believes that Russia’s continued war actions in Ukraine are threatening U.S. national security and foreign policy, and cutting off support to Russia’s oil production will weaken Russia’s economy.
The U.S. government will impose a 25% tariff on imports from India, effective Aug. 27, 2025. The tariffs are in addition to other tariffs, including the 25% reciprocal tariff imposed against India under the April 2 executive order.
The U.S. International Trade Court (ITC) and the Dept. of Commerce (DOC) are also currently investigating whether solar panel imports from India are unfairly priced or subsidized. The Alliance for American Solar Manufacturing and Trade, which petitioned for the AD/CVD investigation, has identified a dumping margin of 213.96%.
With now at least a 50% general tariff on all Indian goods and potentially more coming for solar imports specifically, solar cells and panels from the country could rise in cost very quickly. India is currently the fifth largest import-country-of-origin of solar panels into the United States and the eighth largest country for solar cell imports.

Tariffs are going to make America the world’s richest country, again. In the past 7 months, America has already tallied $17,000,000,000.00 in obligations from foreign countries, and companies to build manufacturing plants in the United States. That doesn’t include billions already collected in new reciprocal tariffs President Trump has implemented in recent months.
