Synopsis: Solar energy has become a practical and accessible choice for everyday households. This article explains the government subsidies available for solar panels and how they help reduce installation costs.
Solar energy is now becoming a normal part of our daily life. Most people have realized that a small rooftop system can reduce their reliance on power cuts, rising electricity prices, and unpredictable bills. To help more families, the government offers subsidies, approvals, and simplified online steps.
In simple words, a government solar panel scheme is a plan that helps you install solar panels at a lower cost.
Solar systems can feel quite expensive and that’s why people who want to switch often hesitate because of the initial cost. Government schemes make sure even middle-income families are able to afford the transition from normal to solar with subsidies and a simple application process. This support helps the families to move into a cleaner energy without feeling the financial pressure.
This scheme launched on 15 Feb, 2024, supports families of urban and rural residents. It aims to supply solar power to one crore household by March 2027.
Eligibility: An Indian resident with residential rooftop and valid electricity connection.
Application Process: You can register directly on the  official Surya Ghar portal. After the system is successfully inspected and installed, the subsidy is directly transferred into your bank account.
This is a central government programme that gives subsidies for rooftop solar installations. With an objective to achieve the capacity of 40,000 MW from connected grid rooftop solar projects, the scheme period is valid till 31 March 2026.
Eligibility: Any Indian resident (homeowners or group housing society) with a valid electricity connection can apply for the scheme. The applicant must follow the guidelines of the state DISCOM for document verification.
Application Process: You need to apply through your state’s DISCOM portal. After that, you select a vendor, install the system, and submit the required documents. Once inspection is complete, the subsidy is credited.
Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan is mainly for farmers.
Eligibility: Indian farmers with land who want to set up solar panels for their irrigation. Lands must be within 5 km range from the electricity plant sub-station, where Grid supply is not applicable.

Delhi promotes rooftop solar with objectives to install rooftop solar capacity to 750 MW within the state.
Eligibility: Any  Delhi resident who wants to avail the central financial assistance (CFA).
Application Process: You can register on the national solar portal and follow the process. If the requirement is met after verification by Discom you will get a TF approval letter via email.
Once the installation is complete, Discom will inspect the site and update net meter installation details of the consumer on the national portal. A commissioning certificate will be generated on your profile and then you can simply enter your bank details with a copy of the transferred cheque to get the subsidy.
At the end of the day, solar power is not just about panels and subsidies, it’s about comfort. It’s about getting smaller electricity bills, feeling safe during power cuts, and knowing you made a smart choice for your home.
These government schemes are simply there to make that choice easier and lighter on your pocket. If you ever thought solar was “too costly” or “too confusing,” these schemes prove that it’s actually within reach.
