South Africa has approved four new solar photovoltaic projects under Bid Window 7 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program, adding 890MW of capacity to the country’s renewable energy portfolio. The projects are expected to connect to the grid within 24 months and will be sited in the Free State and Northern Cape provinces.
The additional capacity brings total procurement under Bid Window 7 to 3,940MW across 18 solar PV projects. The new developments include significant local participation, with 49% South African equity and an average 40% Black Economic Empowerment stake across the awarded projects.
Energy Minister Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa highlighted the economic benefits of the expansion, noting the R16 billion investment will stimulate job creation, industrial activity and broader economic growth while enhancing energy security. He noted the projects demonstrate robust market interest, with 48 bidders proposing a combined 10GW – over twice the initially requested capacity.
“We want the South African economy to grow. We want investors to come into this space, we want to get people into employment, and we are going to use energy to get the economy going,” he said.
