Nissan has unveiled a solar-powered Ariya concept equipped with 3.8m² of high-efficiency photovoltaic panels integrated into the bonnet, roof and tailgate, with real-world testing showing the system can deliver up to 23km of additional range per day in ideal conditions. The concept was developed in partnership with Dutch solar-mobility firm Lightyear, which supplied the panel technology.
Testing showed the system can generate an average of 17.6km of daily solar driving range in cities with high sun exposure such as Barcelona, with year-round averages of 10.2km per day in London, 18.9km per day in New Delhi and 21.2km per day in Dubai. Nissan said drivers could reduce charging frequency by 35-65% depending on usage.

Initial long-distance testing included a 1,550km journey between the Netherlands and Barcelona, demonstrating that solar integration could cut annual charging visits for a 6,000km-per-year commuter from 23 to eight.

In a statement, Shunsuke Shigemoto, Vice President ePowertrain & Internal Combustion Engine Powertrain, Technology Research & Advanced Engineering & Chief Powertrain Engineer, Nissan AMIEO, said: “The solar-powered Ariya concept embodies Nissan’s belief that innovation and sustainability must move forward hand-in-hand. By exploring how vehicles can generate their own renewable energy, we are opening the door to new opportunities for customers.”
