The Gran Canaria Island Council, through the Island Energy Council (CIEGC), in collaboration with the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council and the Canary Islands Government’s Department of Health, has put out to tender the project for the installation of a 236 kW photovoltaic plant on canopies in the parking lot of the Maspalomas Health Center.

The project involves the installation of 398 photovoltaic modules of 640 Wp each, with a total peak power of 254,72 kWp and a nominal power of 236 kW, distributed across canopies in the center’s parking lot. The plant will have four inverters (one 100 kW, two 50 kW, and one 36 kW) and will achieve an estimated annual production of 475.423 kWh, equivalent to the electricity consumption of 136 homes.

In this sense, the emission of 271,94 tons of CO₂ per year will be avoided, which is equivalent to the planting of 1.632 trees, and will allow more than 3,6 million kilometers to be traveled annually in electric vehicles recharged with clean energy generated at the facility itself.

The Minister of Environment, Climate, Energy and Knowledge of the Gran Canaria Island Council, Raúl García Brink, highlighted that “this project demonstrates that the energy transition must also reach health infrastructures, integrating intelligently into already urbanized spaces and contributing to reducing the carbon footprint of essential services for the population.”

García Brink also emphasized that “projects like the one at the Maspalomas Health Center allow the parking lot to be transformed into a multifunctional space, protecting vehicles from the sun while simultaneously generating clean energy for the system itself.” He also expressed his gratitude for the collaboration of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council and the Canary Islands Government’s Ministry of Health, “whose support has been key to making this project possible at a leading healthcare facility in the south of the island.”

The initiative has a budget of 947.009,85 euros, which includes a grant of 766.274,90 euros, within the framework of the aid intended to promote photovoltaic generation in anthropized spaces within the Sustainable Energy Strategy in the Canary Islands (Program 1, Lines 1 and 2), charged to the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (Component 7, Investment 2), financed by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.

The action is part of the island strategy for energy transition and decarbonization of the Gran Canaria Island Council, committed to integrating clean energy generation into existing public infrastructure, without occupying new land and generating direct environmental and social benefits.
