A large scale off grid solar and battery energy storage hybrid plant in Australia is demonstrating how renewable energy can reliably power mining operations in some of the world’s most remote and sun rich regions. The project, ultilizing SMA grid-forming inverter technology, stands as a clear example of how clean energy technologies are now capable of meeting the demanding operational needs of heavy industry while significantly reducing carbon emissions.
The industrial production site is powered by 70,000 solar modules across two solar parks, supported by a 5.4 MWh battery energy storage system. Together, the system replaces an original diesel or thermal power plant, delivering cleaner, more stable and cost effective electricity in a harsh operating environment.
This development highlights a broader shift within the global mining sector towards future ready off grid energy solutions. Mines across Africa in particular are under increasing pressure to secure reliable and affordable power while also reducing their carbon footprint and aligning with global decarbonisation targets.
While bilateral power purchase agreements have played an important role in scaling private renewable energy projects, many large energy off takers are now seeking more flexible approaches. Mining operations often face fluctuating energy demand, multiple sites, evolving production requirements and if connected to the grid suffer voltage fluctuations or even blackouts. As a result, there is growing interest in portfolio based energy solutions that integrate generation, optimisation and energy management rather than relying on a single dedicated asset.
Decarbonisation pressures are particularly acute for mining companies. Global customers, financiers and regulators are placing increased scrutiny on the carbon intensity of mined products. Access to capital is also becoming more closely linked to credible energy transition strategies, making renewable energy procurement a key component of environmental social and governance commitments and long term licence to operate considerations.
The solution was designed and engineered by SMA Altenso, which brings proven global experience in multi-technology energy generation and off grid power systems. By offering full turnkey solutions that combine scale, flexibility and execution capability, the company is well positioned to support mining operations across Africa as they transition to cleaner, more resilient energy systems. SMA Altenso has recently opened an office in Cape Town.
