The innovative Australian company Lumosiy, formerly known as Cardia Bioplastics, has marked a technological milestone by deploying its printed solar panels during the North American leg of the world tour “Music of the Spheres” by the band Coldplay.
This collaboration seeks to drastically reduce the carbon footprint of the event by using cutting-edge renewable energies.
Unlike traditional silicon panels, which are heavy and rigid, these devices use organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells.
The technology allows “printing” the photovoltaic layers onto thin and flexible plastic substrates, using processes similar to newspaper printing.
The main advantages of this technology deployed on the tour are:
Lightweight and flexibility: Being thin sheets, they can adapt to curved surfaces or temporary structures of the stages.
Low manufacturing cost: The roll-to-roll printing process significantly reduces the energy needed for their production.
Sustainability: Unlike conventional panels, these are 100% recyclable, preventing the accumulation of electronic waste at the end of their life cycle.
The band Coldplay is committed to making their tour one of the most eco-friendly in history. Lumosiy panels have been installed in various areas of the stadiums to power lighting systems, sound equipment, and charging stations for fans.
The ability of these panels to operate efficiently even in diffuse light or partial shade conditions makes them ideal for urban environments and large-scale event setups.
Moreover, their easy transport and installation allow the infrastructure to move along with the tour logistics without adding excessive weight to the freight transport.
This deployment represents the first large-scale commercial venture of the Australian startup in North America.
The success in the concerts serves as a “proof of concept” to demonstrate that printed solar panels can compete in applications where silicon is unfeasible, such as in textile architecture, building facades, and portable devices.
The project underscores the importance of clean technologies in the entertainment industry. By integrating recyclable materials and low-emission manufacturing processes, Lumosiy and Coldplay are setting a new standard for sustainability in mega-events.
This initiative not only generates clean energy in real-time but also promotes the circular economy by ensuring that the panels do not end up in landfills once the tour is over.
