A new European Union funding round for solar energy projects has been announced, according to a report from pv magazine. The tender represents the third such initiative under a specific EU renewable energy financing program.
This funding round makes a sum of 54.9 million euros available for solar installations in Bulgaria and Finland. The financial support is being provided by Luxembourg as the contributing member state.
In Bulgaria, the funding is designated for ground-mounted solar projects that are paired with battery storage systems. Eligible projects must be situated within one of three specified districts. For Finland, support is allocated for ground-mounted solar projects located anywhere except a particular island region, with a total capacity limit of 400 megawatts for the country.
All proposed projects must have a minimum capacity of 10 megawatts and cannot exceed 100 megawatts. There is no upper capacity limit for projects in Bulgaria, though the solar and storage components must connect to the grid at the same point. Selected projects are required to commence commercial operations by a set date in early 2029.
The agency managing the tender will host a virtual information session in mid-April to outline selection criteria and payment rules. The deadline for submitting applications is early September 2026, with grant agreements expected to be finalized by June 2027.
This is the third tender of its kind. The first, also financed by Luxembourg and hosted by Finland, concluded in 2024 with agreements for seven projects. A second tender, launched later that year, covered solar projects in Finland and wind projects in Estonia, again with Luxembourg’s financing, and resulted in agreements for nine projects the following year.
Recent data indicates significant solar capacity growth in both host countries. Bulgaria added a substantial amount of solar capacity last year, bringing its cumulative total close to a specific threshold. Finland also achieved a record annual addition for utility-scale solar installations during the same period.
