Nigeria has launched a US$750 million renewable energy programme to deploy 1,350 solar mini grids across the country, targeting improved electricity access for rural and underserved communities while reducing reliance on fossil fuel generators.
The initiative includes plans for approximately 250 of the mini grids to be connected to the national electricity network. This approach is expected to strengthen existing infrastructure while supporting distributed energy generation in areas where grid power remains limited or unreliable.
The programme is structured to mobilise significant private sector participation. While the initial investment totals US$750 million, the government expects the initiative to catalyse an additional US$1.1 billion in private financing, expanding the scale of renewable energy deployment in the country.

Nigeria continues to face a significant electricity access gap, particularly in rural regions where households and small businesses often rely on diesel and petrol generators. These generators are costly to operate and contribute to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
By deploying solar mini grids, the government aims to provide cleaner and more affordable power while supporting economic activity in off grid and weak grid communities.
The new programme forms part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to expand renewable energy and decentralised power systems. It builds on earlier initiatives such as the Nigeria Electrification Project and the National Public Sector Solarization Initiative, both designed to accelerate electrification and reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuel-based generation.
