Millard County officials in Utah have approved zoning for a solar project on 13,000 acres of state trust land. According to Solar Power World, the project is planned by Creekstone Energy to power its hyperscale data center campus located in Delta, Utah.
Creekstone has secured a long-term solar lease with the state’s School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration. Revenue from this lease is designated for the Utah public education system, aligning with the administration’s goal to generate financial returns for public school trusts.
The company plans to develop over one gigawatt of solar power on the leased land within the next 18 months. This generation is intended to support the adjacent Delta Gigasite data center campus, which occupies more than 1,100 acres. The master plan for the campus allows for over 10 gigawatts of total capacity.
The data center campus has access to contracted firm natural gas supply and operates within a favorable regulatory framework. Creekstone is currently progressing with power generation and data center infrastructure development, aiming to support initial deliveries starting in 2027.
Company executives described the solar lease as a significant development, framing the project as the creation of an integrated energy ecosystem. They stated that pairing dedicated solar generation with hyperscale data center infrastructure positions the site advantageously. The development is also presented as a source of long-term economic value for local schools and communities.
Officials noted that the combination of leased land, county zoning approval, and existing energy infrastructure forms a development corridor with unique attributes. With the leased acreage, the company has the land needed to develop a solar portfolio that substantially counterbalances the power consumption of its data center tenants. Site preparation and permitting activities are expected to commence immediately, with the first solar generation anticipated to be operational within a year.
