Solar manufacturer Swift Solar has acquired heterojunction technology intellectual property and manufacturing assets from Meyer Burger, according to a report from pv magazine USA. The California-based company announced the deal, which includes the transfer of a specialized engineering team and executive leadership from the Swiss firm.
The acquisition provides Swift Solar with a vertically integrated path for producing silicon-perovskite tandem cells. Heterojunction technology serves as a high-efficiency silicon base layer for these tandem modules. By adding perovskite onto this base, the company aims to exceed the efficiency limits of conventional silicon technology.
Key members of Meyer Burger’s leadership will join Swift Solar as part of the transaction. This includes the former chief executive officer and the former global head of research and development, who will lead the technology integration.
The move gives Swift Solar control over what is described as the most extensive heterojunction intellectual property portfolio in the Western Hemisphere. This position is considered critical for scaling manufacturing while mitigating litigation risks that have affected investment in high-efficiency solar sectors.
Demand for high-density power is rising, driven by factors including the expansion of artificial intelligence data centers and broader grid electrification. The acquisition is noted as addressing a bottleneck in the U.S. supply chain related to domestic solar cell production.
While module assembly has increased in the United States, cell manufacturing remains concentrated in Asia. Heterojunction technology is unique among silicon platforms because its primary manufacturing equipment can be sourced and built outside of China, aligning with U.S. policy objectives on domestic content and supply chain security.
Swift Solar, which has raised funds from investors and government agencies, plans a phased commercialization approach. The initial phase involves establishing a gigawatt-scale heterojunction cell and module factory in the U.S. to meet immediate demand. Subsequent phases involve integrating proprietary perovskite technology to produce tandem cells, which could provide significantly more power from the same physical footprint compared to standard modules.
The company stated that its tandem products have shown durability over extended high-temperature operation, addressing industry concerns about perovskite material longevity.
