In 2024, the production of solar modules worldwide reached approximately 725 gigawatts. In the last years, global solar module production has increased considerably. In 2024, the world increased its module production by more than 110 gigawatts. Some of the largest solar module-producing companies include Longi Green Energy Technology, JinkoSolar, and Ja Solar Technology.
China is undeniably the world leader in the manufacturing of solar system components. In 2024, the Asian country accounted for roughly 85 percent of global solar module production. Other countries in the Asia-Pacific region followed, with Vietnam and India accounting for an additional six percent. In the last five years, China has increased its module manufacturing capacity from 64 gigawatts in 2018 to 1,010 gigawatts in 2023.
Regions like Europe and North America plan to increase their production capacity of solar components in the next years, as they currently rely strongly on imports. It is forecast that module production capacity in the U.S. will increase from 29 gigawatts in 2023 to approximately 60 gigawatts in 2026. In Europe, the EU’s Solar Energy Strategy aims to increase the region’s solar PV manufacturing base. As of May 2025, the European Union major countries had a combined module production capacity of slightly over 11 gigawatts.
