The Department of Energy of the Philippines is expediting the connection of multiple renewable energy projects to the national grid. The department is fast-tracking twelve solar projects with a combined capacity of about 1,284 megawatts for entry in April.
These solar initiatives are in advanced stages of construction or undergoing final testing and commissioning. The acceleration is a response to the impact on global oil markets caused by developments in the Middle East. Beyond solar, the department is also hastening the grid integration of six hydroelectric plants, two biomass facilities, one wind project, and one integrated renewable energy storage system.
In total, these 22 projects represent 1,471 megawatts of new capacity. The energy agency is collaborating with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, the Energy Regulatory Commission, and the Independent Electricity Market Operator to resolve remaining transmission, interconnection, inspection, registration, and metering requirements to prevent delays.
Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin emphasized that timely delivery of committed capacity is critical for protecting the power system’s integrity. Department monitoring indicates 24 power generation plants are already in commercial operation with over 1.1 gigawatts of capacity, including three solar plants that began operating earlier in March.
In February, the department disclosed plans to auction an additional 25 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2035 through its green energy auction program. This includes scheduling four auctions over the next two years. The most recently-completed auction round approved 10.2 gigawatts for solar, wind, and storage projects in November.
The nation has established targets for renewable energy to constitute 35% of its power generation by 2030, rising to 50% by 2040 and exceeding half by 2050.
