Tyne Tunnels operator powers HQ with major new solar investment – The Northern Echo

The operator of the Tyne Tunnels, TT2, has unveiled a major solar energy investment to provide green power for its 12,000 sq. ft. headquarters, supporting its mission to deliver “sustainable operational excellence.”
The Wallsend-based company has commissioned 212 photovoltaic panels covering 572 sq. m. (6,164 sq. ft.) across three rooftops, expected to generate 115,000kWh of electricity annually—equivalent to the energy use of 42 UK households.
Shaun Simmons, chief operating officer at TT2, said: “This significant investment in solar technology is a proud milestone in our journey toward a greener future for the Tyne Tunnels.
“Reducing our carbon emissions by 28 tonnes annually is a move that reflects our serious commitment to making a positive, long-term environmental impact.”
The solar panels, supplied by Aberla and installed by Washington-based DVC Commercial Roofing Contractors, are projected to reduce the company’s carbon emissions by around 28 tonnes each year.
The project builds on TT2’s wider sustainability efforts, which include 100 per cent renewable electricity use, LED lighting across all tunnels and offices, and transitioning the maintenance and escort fleet to electric vehicles.
Additional plans include rainwater harvesting for non-potable cleaning and ongoing collaboration with environmental groups to enhance biodiversity.
TT2 supports 45,000sq m of woodland above the northbound tunnel and has introduced beehives and wildlife monitoring to protect local species.
The company has been carbon neutral since 2021 and continues to work towards broader emissions reductions across its entire value chain.
In 2025, TT2’s community investment reached more than £120,000, supporting organisations such as St John Ambulance and regional food banks.
