(Alliance News) – Terna Spa announced on Wednesday that Italian electricity consumption in 2025 amounted to 311.3 TWh, a figure essentially equivalent to that of 2024.
Last year, renewable sources covered 41% of demand, compared to 42% in 2024. This result is the consequence of two contrasting effects: on one hand, a record annual photovoltaic output; on the other, hydroelectric production returning to standard values after the high water availability recorded in 2024.
As the company explained in a statement, electricity demand in 2025 was marked by a two-speed trend: the first part of the year saw negative year-on-year changes, followed by a recovery in the second half, also thanks to increased industrial consumption.
Indeed, the IMCEI index, which examines industrial consumption of about 1,000 “energy-intensive” companies, experienced a rebound in the second half of the year. Despite a decline in the early months, this allowed the full year 2025 to close with a slight decrease of 0.7%.
At the regional level, electricity demand saw a 0.1% increase in the North, a 0.4% decrease in the Center, and a 0.7% drop in the South and Islands.
More specifically, Italian electricity demand in 2025 was met 85% by domestic production, with the remainder covered by net imports from abroad.
The combined effect of reduced imports from neighboring countries and the substantial stability of renewables led to a 4.6% increase in thermoelectric generation. However, the decline in coal-fired thermoelectric production continued, dropping by a further 14% in 2025.
Breaking down individual renewable sources, photovoltaic production rose by 25% in 2025, setting a new all-time record by surpassing 44 TWh, with a peak in June of 5.7 TWh—up 36% from June 2024.
Hydroelectric output, after the increase in 2024, returned to previous years’ levels, falling by 21%.
The decrease in wind power was more contained at 3.3%. Geothermal production remained essentially stable, down 0.3%. Stand-alone storage production reached 1.5 TWh, confirming the key role of these resources in supporting the integration of renewables.
According to Terna’s data, considering all renewable sources, capacity additions in Italy in 2025 totaled 7,191 MW. As of December 31, installed capacity stood at 83,529 MW, including, in particular, 43,513 MW of solar and 13,629 MW of wind. Compared to the targets set by the DM Aree Idonee, the goal for new installations over the 2021-2025 five-year period was exceeded by 1,605 MW.
Terna shares down 0.9% at EUR9.01 per share.
