Town of Rye installs more than 100 solar panels on public safety, recreation buildings – WMUR

The Town of Rye has installed 138 solar panels on its public safety building and recreation department garage.
The arrays are expected to produce more than 73,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, saving the town about $12,000 each year. Over the panels’ lifetime, officials estimate the town will save roughly $400,000.
The panels will cover about half of the annual electricity costs at these buildings.

The project was funded using a New Hampshire Department of Energy grant, costing the town only a few thousand dollars.
“Perhaps most importantly, it will offset 77,878 pounds of carbon emissions every single year. And that’s the equivalent of taking cars off the road, planting hundreds of trees, or preventing thousands of gallons of gasoline from being burned,” said Sen. Debra Altschiller, D-Stratham. “These are truly tangible steps towards protecting the environment that we all cherish.”
Rye previously installed solar panels on its middle and high schools.
