Energia Capital requests revocation of solar plants in Brazil – BNamericas

The Energia Capital group requested that Brazil’s electric power watchdog Aneel revoke the concessions for the Sol do Sertão 1 to 18 photovoltaic generating plants.
The plants, which would be installed in the municipality of Oliveira dos Brejinhos, in the state of Bahia, would have a total installed capacity of 856.8MW.
According to the company, the construction of the projects was rendered unfeasible due to the conditions for connecting the plants to the transmission grid, since there is no available capacity for connection at the location.
This is not the first case of this kind involving Energia Capital’s projects. In March, Aneel revoked the permits for the Sol do Sertão B to Sol do Sertão H plants, totaling 183.6MW, which would have been installed in Bom Jesus da Lapa, in the same state, also due to a lack of connection capacity.

At the end of November, Solatio asked Aneel to revoke the permits for the Morro do Preto One to Forty photovoltaic solar plants.
Among the reasons for the request are the increase in curtailment, with direct impacts on the predictability and stability of generation, and the country’s high interest rate, currently at 15%.
In September, FWA Geração de Energia requested the cancellation of the concession for its UFV FWA solar plant due to the intensification of generation curtailments. The company also pointed to impacts from structural overload in the transmission and distribution grids, “which have generated operational restrictions and regulatory uncertainties.”
The excess renewable energy available and the growing cases of curtailment are among the main reasons for the slowdown of the solar energy sector in the country, according to Absolar.

According to Erick Lima, the company’s director of strategy and corporate management, energy storage is an option to mitigate curtailment.
