Buckingham County environmental group brings attention to potential affects of solar farm – WVIR

BUCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) -A 2,000 acre solar panel project along the James River in Buckingham county is causing concern for one group of environmental advocates.
The Friends of Buckingham group is asking county supervisors to hold solar farm developers to agreed upon environmental conditions.
Friends of Buckingham President, Scott Flood is questioning whether Riverstone Solar’s developer, Apex Clean Energy is meeting all of the established environmental conditions for the project.
“We’re just trying to get this back in front of the supervisors’ eyes and ears and we want them to reevaluate and reassess, and moving forward we’d like to see the developer held to the conditions that they agreed to.” Flood said.
Friends of Buckingham will bring up the issue at the board of supervisors’ meeting Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in the Buckingham County administration building.
Those looking to sign up for public comment will have the opportunity to do so between 5:30 and 5:55 p.m.
Apex Clean Energy provided the following statement to 29News:
“Riverstone Solar is committed to abiding by all its permits and associated conditions. Since starting construction in 2025, Riverstone Solar has been in lockstep with Buckingham County, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, and other state and federal agencies with authority over the project. DEQ and Buckingham County have both looked into the claims made by local constituents and, after thorough investigations and site visits, both agencies concluded that the project is in full compliance with all its permits. We’re pleased with their findings, proud of the work we are doing, and look forward to completing construction and becoming the largest taxpayer in the county. In addition to working closely with regulatory officials, we actively engage with community feedback to identify areas for improvement in our existing work. Since starting construction, we have continually made adjustments to ensure the project’s smooth and safe progression based on this feedback.”
