China Launches Transparent Windows Producing Solar Power – The Daily CPEC

China has developed transparent photovoltaic windows capable of generating solar energy while preserving the aesthetic of buildings. The technology, created by Dr. Dewei Zhang and his team at Nanjing University, uses a Colorless Unidirectional Solar Concentrator (CUSC) that channels sunlight to the edges of glass and into photovoltaic cells.
These innovative windows reduce energy consumption by up to 75% compared to conventional rooftop solar panels. They also integrate high-efficiency cells, such as gallium arsenide, maximizing energy output and allowing urban buildings to generate clean energy without compromising design.
The new system aligns with sustainable energy targets, urban planning, and carbon reduction goals. Future improvements will enhance broadband efficiency and light polarization, enabling most transparent surfaces in buildings to function as active solar generators.
