World’s largest offshore solar farm fully connects to China’s power grid – VnExpress International

Located about 8 kilometers off the coast of Dongying city, Shandong Province, the project spans over 1,200 hectares and consists of 2,934 offshore PV platforms. Each platform measures 60 meters in length and 35 meters in width, equivalent to five standard basketball courts.

Developed by Guohua Energy Investment Company, a subsidiary of China Energy Investment Corporation (CHN Energy), the project is notable for being the first to use a 66-kilovolt offshore cable combined with an onshore cable for high-capacity, long-distance transmission. This innovative design enables greater transmission capacity at lower costs. It is expected to serve as a model for large-scale offshore PV projects in the industry, according to CGTN.
The solar farm features a four-pile foundation and solar platform design. Its panels are tilted at a precise 15-degree angle to withstand strong gales and winter ice conditions. Zhang Bo, deputy manager of the Kenli project at Guohua Energy Investment, explained that this structure reduces steel usage by over 10%.
Several provinces and cities, including Shandong, Jiangsu, and Shanghai, have planned offshore solar projects to help land-constrained areas develop renewable energy sources.
The project off Dongying is expected to generate nearly 1.8 billion kilowatt-hours of power annually, with an estimated reduction of more than 1.3 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year, according to Bloomberg.
