MIDDLEBURG — The Midd-West School Board is considering purchasing the solar array installed on its property in 2020.
The 2.65-megawatt solar array covers six acres at the Middleburg campus and 1.25 acres at West Snyder Elementary School in Beaver Springs. It has saved $465,266 in energy costs and, under an agreement with Solar Renewable Energy LLC, the district has the option every five years to purchase the array and end yearly service fees to the company.
Superintendent Joe Stroup outlined options to the school board for purchasing the solar array or continuing to allow the company to manage it.
The district currently pays an annual service fee to the company for the electricity generated by the array. The annual fee this year is $373,109 and will rise 3 percent each year through 2045.
Stroup said if the board opts to purchase the array for $3.175 million, the annual service fee payments would stop and the district would pay Solar Renewable Energy $18,000 a year to maintain it. Any repairs would be the district’s responsibility.
The district has set aside $4 million for the purchase and “in nine years it pays for itself,” he said of the savings from eliminating service fees.
The school board is scheduled to make a decision at the Jan. 26 public meeting.
