SLO County Airport activates new solar energy system – Paso Robles Daily News

– The SLO County Airport has received Permission to Operate for a new 940-kilowatt solar energy system, allowing the system to become fully operational and supply power to airport operations.
The solar system will provide renewable energy generated on California’s Central Coast and is expected to supply a substantial portion of the airport’s daily energy needs.
The project is associated with the County of San Luis Obispo Department of Airports and supports the department’s long-term planning related to environmental stewardship, operational resilience, and use of public resources.
“This project reflects our shared responsibility to protect the Central Coast for future generations,” said Dawn Ortiz-Legg, District 3 supervisor. “Forward-thinking projects like this solar energy system demonstrate how public infrastructure can lead by example—reducing emissions, increasing resilience, and showing that sustainability and smart governance go hand in hand.”
Airport officials said the solar system is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to long-term cost efficiencies. The project aligns with the Department of Airports’ stated mission and values related to environmental leadership, innovation, fiscal responsibility, and service to the community.
“This is a proud moment for our airport and our team,” said Courtney Johnson, director of airports. “Achieving Permission to Operate for this system is more than flipping a switch; it represents our commitment to building a forward-looking airport that serves our community while caring for the environment. Sustainability is not a standalone initiative for us; it is integrated into how we plan, operate, and invest in the future of SLO County Airport.”
Airport officials said the airport will continue focusing on providing safe and reliable service while making infrastructure investments tied to environmental performance and long-term operations.
