Wafa Fezzan Initiative announced last Monday (2 February) that it has begun delivering support to selected farmers in the south of Libya as part of its efforts to strengthen the agricultural and environmental sectors and enable farmers to sustain their production.
With the support of the eastern based Libyan government, the initiative aims to empower the youth of southern Libya, especially the Fezzan region, through entrepreneurship training and incentives of financial grants.
Solar power systems on farms
This came through the implementation of a project to install solar power systems on farms, providing a reliable energy source, improving agricultural efficiency, reducing operational costs, and promoting the use of clean and sustainable energy solutions.
The first phase of the project was launched in the Al-Bawanees region (near Samnu and an hour north-east from Sebha), serving as a starting point for implementation, with plans to gradually expand to other regions across Fezzan.
Food security
The Wafa Fezzan Initiative aims to bring the land back to life and tackle the South’s most pressing challenge: food security.
The solar energy systems aim to ease farmers’ burden from unstable electricity and soaring costs.
Wafa Fezzan Initiative said this step reflects a firm commitment to supporting farmers, enhancing stability, and advancing sustainable agricultural development in the southern region.
