Grenergy has reached a new milestone in Chile with the energisation of the fourth phase of Oasis de Atacama, one of the most ambitious solar photovoltaic (PV) projects with battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Latin America.
The newly commissioned phase, known as Gabriela, incorporates 272 MW of solar PV capacity and 1.1 GWh of lithium-ion battery storage, enhancing the project’s ability to deliver dispatchable renewable energy and contribute to grid flexibility.
This stage represents roughly 10% of the overall Oasis de Atacama development, which is designed to reach 2 GW of installed solar capacity and 11 GWh of energy storage once fully completed. At that scale, the project is set to become a regional benchmark for the integration of large-scale renewable generation with long-duration storage.
As in the first three phases, Spanish technology provider Ingeteam supplied the photovoltaic inverters, consolidating a long-standing technological partnership that will also extend to the project’s sixth phase. In parallel, China-based CATL, one of the world’s leading battery manufacturers, will provide the energy storage systems for subsequent stages.
From a financial perspective, the Gabriela phase was sold in September to infrastructure investor CVC DIF, part of global asset manager CVC, for a total consideration of up to US$475 million. Under the agreement, Grenergy will remain responsible for operation and maintenance (O&M) services for five years, ensuring operational continuity and the transfer of technical know-how.
With the energisation of this fourth phase, Oasis de Atacama is now entering its final stretch, with only two stages remaining before full completion. The first three phases, which together total 451 MW of solar PV and 2.5 GWh of storage, were brought online last year.
The project is located in the Atacama Desert, one of the regions with the highest solar irradiation levels worldwide, making it a strategic hub for utility-scale renewable energy investment in Chile.
Oasis de Atacama is at the core of Grenergy’s growth strategy through 2027. In parallel, the company is advancing other solar-plus-storage developments. One of them is in Chile’s Biobío Region, in the country’s centre-south, where construction has already begun on a project combining 340 MW of solar PV and 960 MWh of battery storage, with commercial operation expected in 2027.
The expansion plan is complemented by a hybrid project in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, which will add 200 MW of solar capacity and 704 MWh of storage, reinforcing the group’s strategy of replicating large-scale hybrid power plants in key international markets.
Through these developments, Grenergy aims to position itself as a key player in dispatchable solar energy, a rapidly growing segment that is increasingly critical for supporting the energy transition and addressing grid stability and flexibility challenges.
