GIRARD, Kan. – (KOAM) – A solar development company has given Crawford County until February 12 to lift its moratorium on solar projects, but incomplete survey results from neighboring property owners have delayed the decision-making process.
Shasta Power representatives failed to appear at Tuesday’s Crawford County Commission meeting with promised survey data from homeowners near the proposed solar farm site. The company had been expected to present complete results from its neighborhood canvassing efforts.
“I talked to him yesterday and the survey is not fully complete,” Pat Walden, speaking on behalf of John Copyak told the Commissioners. “Now, there’s a couple of people that request a little bit more time. So I’m here to report to you that he’ll be here. Hopefully, it’ll be finished real quick. And he can be here in give you the numbers.”
Copyak later provided a statement to KOAM explaining the delay stems from wanting to give undecided homeowners additional time to consider their positions. According to Copyak, 19 homeowners currently support the project and want compensation, while eight oppose it. ” 10 homeowners remain undecided, creating the main obstacle to completing the survey.
District 2 Commissioner Tom Moody expressed confidence that Shasta Power will return with data, though he remains uncertain about the timeline.
“I feel that they will come back,” he said. “I don’t doubt that one bit. Whether they will have that the, you know, the surveys and numbers, that remains to be seen. But I’m sure there’s more questions that need to be answered.”
Copyak has not provided an exact timeline for when complete survey results will be available to county commissioners.
