A measurement comparison between the CalLab PV Modules of Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt found their performance assessments of photovoltaic modules deviate by less than 0.15 percent on average. The original source is pv magazine.
The two German organizations have conducted interlaboratory measurement programs for many years at both the solar cell and module levels to validate calibration levels. Their latest comparison, finalized in December, achieved this deviation of less than 0.15 percent on determined power.
According to the head of CalLab PV Modules at Fraunhofer ISE, Martin Kaiser, this annual comparison with PTB is a primary indicator for the calibration laboratory to confirm its measurements are accurate. The institute stated that engineering, procurement, and construction service providers depend on accurate, independent power measurements when selecting PV modules, and a stable, traceable calibration level is the foundation for reliably assessing module quality and efficiency.
Fraunhofer ISE also reported that the discrepancy between the power ratings of many PV module manufacturers and its own measurement results has been growing. This median negative deviation reached 1.4 percent in 2025. Last March, Fraunhofer released results from testing over 70,000 solar modules, which showed a negative trend emerging since 2017 between manufacturer performance data and the institute’s measurements.
