Ochoco Irrigation District received $1 million in federal funding to build a floating solar farm near Ochoco Reservoir, aimed at generating renewable energy and reducing evaporation.
PRINEVILLE, Ore. — The Ochoco Irrigation District has been awarded $1 million in federal funding for a renewable energy project near Prineville.
District officials said the funding will support construction of a floating solar farm on a pond near the Ochoco Reservoir.
The project calls for an array of solar panels to float on the surface of the water, generating electricity while also providing environmental benefits. Officials said shade from the panels is expected to reduce evaporation from the pond and improve water quality by limiting the growth of large algae blooms.
The district’s manager said the project will deliver low-cost renewable energy to area residents, helping offset power expenses while making use of existing water infrastructure.
Installation of the floating solar panels is expected to begin this summer.
