MANILA, Philippines — A unit of Aboitiz Renewables Inc. is seeking clearance from the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) for the P564.6-million integration of its hybrid solar farm in Ilocos Norte into the Luzon grid.
Aboitiz-led Northern Luzon Green Power Inc. (NLGPI) is proposing to build, own and operate interconnection facilities for its 187-megawatt-peak Talingaan-Laoag Solar Power Project equipped with a 277-MW-hour battery storage.
The project will be linked to the country’s power transmission network via the 230-kilovolt Laoag substation of National Grid Corp. of the Philippines in the Ilocos region.
The dedicated transmission facility consists of high-voltage equipment, dedicated point-to-point lines and other associated accessories, NLGPI said in a filing with the ERC.
The company cited the need to connect the Talingaan-Laoag SPP to the grid immediately upon completion to prevent unnecessary delays that could lead to opportunity costs and strain amid rising demand.
“The dedicated facility project is necessary to test, commission and dispatch the capacity of the Talingaan-Laoag SPP and shall be exclusively utilized by NLGPI,” it noted.
Under the Electric Power Industry Reform Act, generation companies may develop, own and operate dedicated transmission facilities to integrate their projects into the grid.
Such facilities, however, must be built solely for connecting to the transmission network and used exclusively by the generating plants, subject to prior ERC approval.
While awaiting the ERC’s decision on its application, NLGPI said there is a sufficient basis for granting provisional authority or interim relief for the development and operation of the dedicated transmission facility.
Recently, South Cleanergy Inc., another Aboitiz-led firm, sought ERC approval for the P512.16-million grid interconnection of its large-scale solar farm with battery storage in Negros Occidental.
