Built by ENGIE Brasil, the Assú Sol Photovoltaic Complex in Assú (RN) began full commercial operations on February 13, following the completion in December of what is now ENGIE’s largest operational solar project. At an investment worth R$ 3.3 billion and an installed capacity of 895 MWp (753 MWac) and having 229,6 average MW of commercial capacity totally earmarked to the Free Market Environment, Assú Sol underscores the Company’s protagonism in the Brazilian energy transition and consolidates the state of Rio Grande do Norte as a strategic territory for renewable energy generation. In addition, the asset’s commercial capacity is enough to supply a city of approximately 850,000 inhabitants.
Even prior to reaching full commercial operations, Assú Sol was already making a significant contribution to the generation of renewable energy at ENGIE. During February, ENGIE Brasil had already beaten its record for generation from solar sources at 1,400 MW, with Assú Sol responsible for 50% of this amount.
“The completion of Assú Sol underscores ENGIE’s capacity to execute heavy duty projects with discipline, efficiency and responsibility. We have delivered the ENGIE Group’s largest operational solar complex anywhere in the world on time and on budget and respecting the communities involved, thanks to the performance of the development, implementation, and operation teams as well as all ENGIE teams involved. The achievement reflects the technical competence and reliability of our strategy for driving sustainable growth in Brazil, contributing to the diversification of the country’s electric energy matrix”, points out ENGIE Brasil’s Chief Executive Officer, Eduardo Sattamini.
Construction was conducted over a 30-month period, was responsible for the creation of more than 4,500 direct jobs, and achieved an exemplary safety record, with zero accidents requiring time off work. During implementation, Assú Sol was notable for its use of innovative construction techniques, such as aerial mapping with drones, automated motor graders integrated with 3D models, and the pioneering use in Brazil of an automatic pile driver geared to photovoltaic projects. These solutions enabled greater precision leveling terrain, increased productivity, optimized execution time, and significant improvements in the safety and sustainability standards of the project.
“A project the size of Assú Sol requires precision, planning, and impeccable coordination between our own teams, partners, and suppliers. Each stage was handled with technical rigor and responsibility, ensuring safety, efficiency, and respect for local communities. Seeing the project reach full commercial operation is a source of great pride and reinforces ENGIE’s ability to deliver complex projects with excellence,” said Paulo Müller, Implementation Director at ENGIE Brazil.
Installed in a licensed area of 2,344 hectares, Assú Sol consists of more than 1.5 million photovoltaic modules, 12 thousand kilometers of cabling and 53 kilometers of internal accesses, connected directly to a substation through an approximately one-kilometer-long transmission line.
“Assú Sol represents not only a major energy project but also a symbol of what we can build when we combine technology, good engineering and responsible relations with the communities”, remarks ENGIE Brasil’s project manager, Giuliano Pasquali.
The positive fallout from the project also extended to the social development of the region. A total of R$ 50 million was invested in socio-environmental initiatives throughout the construction phase and recent start of operations, of which R$ 8.9 million was specifically allocated to social responsibility initiatives in Assú, including the Bela Vista Piató community’s Quilombola Action Plan and Private Social Investment projects which benefited the surrounding communities. Actions include the building of a school, a primary health unit, community kitchen, a multi-sports court, donation of a tractor and agricultural implements, professionalizing courses, access systems and water storage, and fostering family agriculture, among others.
