US puts big tax on Indian solar panels – Deccan Herald

If you have seen solar panels on school rooftops or large solar farms, you know they turn sunlight into electricity. India has been trying to sell more of these panels to countries like the United States. But a new trade decision from Washington may make that harder.
The U.S. Commerce Department has decided to impose a 126 per cent countervailing duty on certain solar cells and panels exported from India. The decision also applies to manufacturers operating in Indonesia and Laos.
According to U.S. officials, manufacturers in these countries benefited from wide-ranging state support that could distort competition in the global clean energy market. As a result, Indian exporters may now find it much more expensive to sell their products in the U.S.
The decision has already affected Indian solar companies. Industry experts say the move is a setback because the U.S. accounts for a large share of India’s solar exports.
