Scientists from Konya Technical University have created a passive anti-soiling coating for photovoltaic modules, according to pv magazine. The method uses aluminum oxide nanoparticles altered with oleic acid, which are applied to panel glass with a spray-coating technique.
The team tested solutions with different oleic acid concentrations and spray durations. Analysis indicated that a coating applied for 40 seconds with a 1.5% concentration of oleic acid produced a film with a thickness of 231 nanometers and a water contact angle of 75.47 degrees. Uncoated glass showed a lower contact angle.
In controlled laboratory tests using mini-modules, surfaces with the coating accumulated less dust on average than uncoated surfaces. This resulted in a measured reduction in energy efficiency losses. Subsequent field testing on a university campus involved monitoring coated and uncoated mini-modules over several weeks.
During the field assessment, the coated panels initially produced more daily energy output than the uncoated reference modules. However, the performance of the coated panels started to decrease, which researchers linked to prolonged exposure to environmental factors including high temperatures and low wind speeds.
The research was detailed in a paper published in Scientific Reports, with collaboration from Selcuk University.
