New guidelines from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and other government departments aim to elevate green manufacturing standards for photovoltaic modules. According to Recycling International, the policy seeks to increase the application of recycled materials and refine assessment and inspection methods for scrap panels.
The framework establishes a goal for the cumulative handling of retired photovoltaic units to reach 250,000 tonnes by 2027. Industry projections cited in the source indicate that the volume of decommissioned solar panels may reach 18 gigawatts by 2030. A longer-term forecast suggests cumulative waste could grow significantly by 2040.
Authorities are pushing for technological progress in areas including dismantling procedures and the separation of laminated components. The guidelines encourage wider use of recycled photovoltaic materials in industries such as metal smelting and building materials.
Efforts also include creating technical standards for module design and use. By 2030, the plan targets enhanced recycling technology, greater industrial innovation, and broader markets for recycled goods. Solar panels contain various recoverable materials, such as glass, silicon, and metals, whose reuse can alleviate environmental and resource pressures.
Some used panels are reportedly diverted from recycling streams and resold to markets with less stringent efficiency demands, thereby extending their service life.
