New data from the German Federal Statistical Office shows the number of operational photovoltaic systems in the country reached a new record at the end of 2025. Approximately 4.8 million installations with a total nominal capacity of around 106,200 megawatts were recorded at that time.
This represents an increase of 17.6 percent in the number of systems compared to the previous year, while installed capacity grew by 11.8 percent. The growth rate has moderated recently, as the year-end increase for 2024 had been 27.7 percent compared to 2023.
Imports of photovoltaic cells and modules declined in value during 2025, falling by 7.8 percent compared to the previous year. The value of exports saw a more pronounced decrease of 30.1 percent over the same period.
China remained the dominant supplier, providing 88.0 percent of photovoltaic systems imported into Germany in 2025. The Netherlands was a distant second. The value of imports was nearly five times higher than the value of exports, with Italy, Austria, and Switzerland being the leading export destinations.
Domestic production of solar modules fell sharply in the first three quarters of 2025, dropping by 60.6 percent compared to the same period a year earlier. This follows a significant production decline already registered in 2024.
For private households, solar power generation has become a source of income for a growing share of the population. In 2023, 4.9 percent of households reported earnings from selling electricity to the grid, an increase from 2.9 percent in 2018. However, the average monthly revenue from these sales decreased between those years.
