Solar Steel points to agrivoltaics and utility-scale PV as key drivers of Italy’s solar growth – Review Energy

Following its participation in KEY – The Energy Transition Expo 2026, Gonvarri Solar Steel has reinforced its position in the Italian photovoltaic market, highlighting both its technological developments and its long-term commitment to one of Europe’s most dynamic solar sectors.
The company attended the event in Rimini with a renewed exhibition space where it presented solutions from its multi-product platform and welcomed partners, clients, and industry stakeholders to discuss the evolution of the solar market in Italy.
One of the key highlights at the stand was the first presentation of Solar Steel’s 2P solar tracker in an agrivoltaic configuration at semi-real scale, a solution designed to enhance compatibility between photovoltaic generation and agricultural activity. The technology responds to the growing demand for agrivoltaic systems in Europe and particularly in Italy, where the segment is gaining strong momentum.
According to Rafael Bañón, Key Account Manager Italy at Solar Steel, the Italian photovoltaic market is currently experiencing a natural shift toward larger projects.
“In Italy we are seeing a natural evolution of the market. While distributed generation projects previously had a predominant presence, utility-scale projects are increasingly taking the lead,” he explained during the event.
By the end of last year, Italy had surpassed 43 GW of installed solar capacity. Although residential and commercial segments have seen a slight slowdown, the pipeline for large-scale projects continues to expand, supported by regulatory developments and a growing number of projects awaiting construction.
For Solar Steel, maintaining strong technical support and a solid local presence remains a central priority. The company, which has been active in Italy since 2010 and now operates with its own local team, continues to focus on delivering projects with high technical standards while adapting to the market’s evolving requirements.
“Attention to technical detail and close local support are essential for the success of these projects,” Bañón noted, highlighting that developers are currently paying particular attention to delivery schedules and grid connection timelines.
During the exhibition, Solar Steel also showcased several technical improvements to its tracking solutions, including developments related to pre-assembly strategies aimed at optimizing installation processes and improving efficiency during construction.
Innovation remains a key pillar for the company in a highly competitive sector.
“This is a market that does not forgive. If you fall behind, you are out,” Bañón stated. “That is why continuous innovation is essential.”
Beyond the growth of utility-scale solar, one of the most distinctive characteristics of the Italian market today is the rapid development of advanced agrivoltaics, a segment that combines renewable energy generation with agricultural production under specific technical requirements.
Solar Steel is already participating in several projects within this segment, including what Bañón highlighted as the largest advanced agrivoltaic project currently under development in Italy, located in Giugliano.
With a strong project pipeline and increasing regulatory clarity, the outlook for the Italian photovoltaic sector remains positive. As new authorizations move forward and support mechanisms are implemented, the country is expected to enter a new phase of expansion in which utility-scale solar and agrivoltaic solutions will play a central role.
