A clean energy initiative supported by Australia will install solar power and battery storage for remote communities in Samoa. According to pv magazine Australia, the project involves a financial commitment of 1.2 million Australian dollars.
The effort will provide clean energy access to 108 households and five community centers located on the islands of Upolu and Savaii, which are outside the national electricity grid. On Apolima island, an existing mini-grid will be upgraded to supply continuous renewable electricity to 11 households.
The Samoan Electric Power Corp. is implementing the project in partnership with the nation’s Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development. The Australian government’s REnew Pacific initiative is providing support.
Installations will include rooftop solar panels and battery storage for 88 off-grid homes. A separate fast-track program will assist an additional 20 households, aiming to ensure equitable access for families who may face application or installation challenges. The five community centers, known as fales, will also receive solar and battery systems to offer residents shared services like phone charging and lighting.
The Electric Power Corp. will retain ownership and maintenance responsibilities for the installed systems. The corporation also plans to conduct community training and awareness sessions on safe and efficient energy use.
Project officials stated that the collaboration reflects a governance model based on partnership and inclusion. They expressed gratitude for the Australian government’s support, noting this is the first Samoa project funded through a specific Australian infrastructure facility for the Pacific. The goal is described as delivering reliable power to families who have lacked access and advancing the nation’s progress toward universal clean energy.
The REnew Pacific program focuses on supporting locally-led renewable energy projects for off-grid rural communities in the Pacific region and Timor-Leste.
