MIAMI — A utility-scale solar project in southwestern Indiana has begun commercial operations, expanding renewable energy capacity in the region.
Origis Energy announced that its Wheatland Solar facility in Knox County entered service Friday, Feb. 27. The project has a generating capacity of 210 megawatts direct current and 150 megawatts alternating current, and will supply electricity under a 20-year power purchase agreement with CenterPoint Energy.
“At Origis Energy, we take pride in delivering high-quality projects safely, on schedule, and in close partnership with our customers,” said David Groleau, senior vice president of Origination at Origis Energy. “Reaching commercial operations at Wheatland reflects the strength of our development and execution platform and our continued commitment to providing reliable, cost-effective energy solutions for utilities and the communities they serve.”
The facility is expected to support energy reliability and diversification efforts within CenterPoint’s Indiana service territory. The project aligns with the utility’s long-term strategy to incorporate a broader mix of energy sources while maintaining affordability and grid stability.
Construction of the solar installation provided a temporary boost to the local economy. At peak activity, the project supported about 360 construction jobs, contributing to employment and regional investment during its development phase.
“Our long-term electric generation plan is focused on delivering reliable, affordable and diversified energy for our southwestern Indiana customers,” said Shane Bradford, CenterPoint Energy’s Vice President, Indiana Electric. “We appreciate working with Origis Energy to bring the Wheatland Solar project to commercial operations in support of that effort.”
The Wheatland Solar project also drew significant financial backing, including tax equity support from JPMorgan Chase and additional financing through Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group.
Origis Energy, a national renewable energy developer, focuses on building and operating solar and energy storage projects across the United States. The company said the completion of Wheatland Solar highlights its ability to deliver utility-scale projects on schedule while meeting growing demand for clean energy.
The project represents another step in Indiana’s ongoing transition toward renewable power, as utilities and developers increase investment in solar generation to meet future energy needs.
