India Adds 119 GW Solar Module Capacity | – Chemical Industry Digest

India significantly strengthened its solar manufacturing base in 2025 by adding 119 GW of solar module capacity and over 9 GW of solar cell capacity. As a result, the country’s cumulative manufacturing capacity reached approximately 210 GW for modules and 27 GW for cells. The rapid expansion underscores India’s growing ambition to become a global solar manufacturing hub.
Several factors fuelled the surge in capacity. To begin with, a strong pipeline of utility-scale solar projects created sustained demand for modules. In addition, the government’s PM Surya Ghar initiative accelerated residential rooftop solar adoption across the country. The domestic cell manufacturing mandate under ALMM List II played a crucial role in encouraging local production. Together, these initiatives helped create a supportive ecosystem for domestic manufacturers.
At the same time, the solar manufacturing landscape is evolving. Demand for mono PERC technology is gradually declining, while manufacturers are increasingly investing in more advanced and efficient technologies. Consequently, rising capital requirements are shifting market share toward larger, well-capitalized players. This trend is expected to further consolidate the industry and drive technological upgrades.
Despite the strong domestic expansion, India continues to rely heavily on imports. In 2025, the country imported nearly 99 GW of solar modules and cells, with solar cells accounting for about 75% of the total imports. On the other hand, domestic manufacturers also made progress in exports. India exported around 5 GW of solar modules, primarily to the United States, and approximately 192 MW of solar cells, with most shipments directed to the UAE.
As reported by news.metal.com, India’s rapid capacity addition reflects a strategic push toward self-reliance and supply chain resilience. While import dependence remains a challenge, continued policy support and investments in advanced technologies are likely to enhance domestic competitiveness in the coming years.
