Historic Horsforth church resubmits solar panel plans – West Leeds Dispatch

By John Baron
Bosses at a historic Horsforth church have submitted fresh plans to install solar panels to the south nave roof.
Grade II Listed St James Church, in Low Lane, is around 178 years old and church chiefs want to install solar panels to make the church more energy efficient and the building more sustainable to run.
A planning statement submitted with the application states: “The transition to a more sustainable building will allow the Parochial Church Council to develop plans to use the church building for further community groups, providing a much-needed resource for the surrounding area.”
Similar proposals for panels on the south nave and south aisle pitched roofs were refused by council planners last August, due to the ‘detrimental impact on the architectural and historic character of the listed building’ and because the application ‘lacked detail’.
The church says the rejection led them to re-evaluate their aims and objectives.
“Following these applications, an assessment of the financial situation and identification of roofs for immediate replacement, the PCC have concluded to resubmit a revised application for works to the Nave roof only,” the design statement added.
The Victorian church building was designed by architect CW Burleigh and was consecrated in 1848.
