The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), through the General Directorate of Energy Efficiency (DGEE), highlighted that Peru has an estimated potential of 937 thousand megawatts (MW) for power generation with solar energy, which represents a strategic opportunity for energy security, sustainability, electrification of isolated areas, and the energy transition.
“Peru is a country blessed with energy resources, both non-renewable and renewable, the latter being underutilized,” said the director of the DGEE, José Meza, explaining that the solar potential has been identified through a technical study that considered criteria such as proximity to transmission grids, geographical conditions, and the exclusion of protected areas.
During the XIII Peru Energy Conference 2026, he pointed out that, in Peruvian territory, there are areas with good solar potential, with the southern regions of the country concentrating the greatest potential, with Arequipa standing out in first place with 230 thousand MW; followed by Ica, which has 160 thousand MW; and in third place on the list Puno, which reaches 136 thousand MW.
Piura (132 thousand MW); Tacna (71 thousand MW); Moquegua (55 thousand MW), Cusco (44 thousand MW), Ayacucho (29 thousand MW); Lambayeque (20 thousand MW), Áncash (14 thousand MW), Junín (10 thousand MW), among other regions also present significant opportunities for the development of solar projects.
Meza highlighted that the southern regions, such as Ica, Arequipa, Moquegua, and Tacna, have some of the highest levels of solar radiation on the planet, which positions Peru as an attractive destination for investments in photovoltaic generation.
He highlighted that there is a significant portfolio of projects under development and that, as of February 2026, there are initiatives in the study phase that have Pre-Operability Studies approved by the Economic Operation Committee of the National Interconnected System (COES), which could add up to 13.6 GW of new installed capacity.
Meza added that the energy transition is a global trend in which renewable energies have been gaining share compared to hydrocarbons, which still account for about 75% of global energy consumption, and reaffirmed MINEM’s commitment to promote the sustainable use of these resources.
