Several labor unions spoke in favor of the Plano Skies solar project at last week’s City Council meeting.
Union representatives say they have an agreement with Savion Energy to use union labor to build the nearly 1,500-acre solar farm.
Joe Sweeney of Operators 150 was among the speakers.
“Simply, the, the Plano skies, project, which I’m here tonight to briefly talk about, is a real economic opportunity for the city of Plano. It brings forth meaningful private investment, strengthens the local tax base, and creates immediate economic activity. And just as important, it adds new energy capacity to our grid in Illinois at a time when we’re facing increasing demand and tightening supply.”
Many Little Rock Township and Plano residents have voiced opposition to the project.
Resident and frequent City Council commenter Matt Jackson urged the council to consider the long-term impacts on the city and to ensure Plano is getting a good deal from Savion.
“It’s great to be able to provide union jobs for this community, but if the taxes are so high the union guys can’t live here, we’re not gonna have union long term here. They’re gonna move out somewhere else, some other place so they can afford to live here, not Kendall County. So, we need to think about this in the negotiation with Plano Skies of our long term problems.”
The company has applied for the project with the city, but the item is not yet on the Plan Commission’s schedule for public hearings. A previously proposed data center tied to the project has been removed.
