Rooftop solar installation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area is now supported by a new service providing homeowners with free, personalized guidance throughout the process.
“Many people love the idea of solar power as a way to take climate action, but it’s complicated,” Chris Caners, director of clean electrification at The Atmospheric Fund (TAF), said in a release. “We’ll help you understand your options, access available incentives, and make it easier to power your home with clean energy.”
TAF’s Home Solar Accelerator program aims to help at least 1,000 GTHA homeowners install rooftop solar panels over the next four years, an installation rate that would add more than eight megawatts of carbon-free electricity to Ontario’s grid. “That’s 50,000 tonnes of carbon reduction potential over the lifetime of the PV system,” TAF says.

Offering “home solar advice without the jargon,” the service begins with the creation of a “Solar Journey Report” that informs owners of their homes’ solar potential, electricity savings, and what pre-work is needed.
Homeowners can apply to the program at any stage of their installation. They are matched with an expert who advises them throughout the process, helping them choose from vetted installers, navigate permit approvals, and understand their financing options.
The program promises trustworthy cost projections with “no sales pressure.”
The service is available to all homeowners within the GTHA, whether they live in dense urban neighbourhoods, suburbs, or rural communities. If homeowners want to pair solar with battery storage, it can help with that, too.
Oakville Mayor Rob Burton welcomed the program. “Increasing local renewable power production is a key element of Oakville’s climate action plan,” Burton said in the TAF release. “TAF’s Home Solar Accelerator can help our community scale this up and generate financial value and carbon reduction along with electricity.”
By engaging with local power companies about factoring rooftop solar and other distributed energy resources into their plans, TAF hopes the Solar Accelerator will outlast its initial four-year plan.
“Our aim is that the program will prove successful and reach scale, and be taken over by another non-profit or public institution after the first few years,” Julie Leach, TAF’s senior communications manager, told The Energy Mix in an email.
