Botswana: Oman-based renewable energy company Naqaa Sustainable Energy has reportedly been selected as the lead developer for a 500 MW solar PV project in Botswana.
According to local media citing Botswana’s Ministry of Minerals and Energy, the company will design, finance, construct and operate what is expected to be the country’s largest solar power facility. The project is planned for development near Maun in northern Botswana and is expected to include integrated battery energy storage.
While detailed information remains limited, the project forms part of a broader cooperation agreement signed last year between Omani and Botswanan authorities. The agreement targets the development of up to 3 GW of combined solar, wind and storage capacity in Botswana.
The initiative is linked to O-Green, a clean energy company backed by Oman’s sovereign wealth fund, which was established in 2025 to support renewable energy development domestically and internationally. O-Green owns Naqaa Sustainable Energy, which is tasked with delivering a portfolio of gigawatt-scale renewable and storage projects across Oman, the Gulf region and Africa.
O-Green also operates other subsidiaries focused on wind technology and renewable project development, supporting its wider clean energy strategy.
Botswana is currently expanding its renewable energy sector and attracting international investment. Recent developments include cooperation with Indian and European partners on large-scale solar and wind projects, as well as ongoing PV developments such as the Mmadinare Solar Cluster and a project near Jwaneng.
Further details on the Maun project are still expected as discussions progress between the relevant parties.
