AES Chile expands Latin America’s largest solar and storage hub – Strategic Energy Europe

AES Chile has announced the start of operations of Andes Solar III, located in the Antofagasta Region, as it continues to expand its Andes Solar Hub—one of the largest solar PV and energy storage complexes in Latin America. The project forms part of a total investment exceeding USD 1.3 billion to date.
Andes Solar III comprises a 171 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant and a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 171 MW and a three-hour duration. This configuration enables the delivery of renewable and flexible energy to Chile’s National Electric System.
With the addition of this latest phase, the Andes Solar Hub now totals 692 MW of installed solar PV capacity and 510 MW of battery storage.
Javier Dib, CEO of AES Andes, highlighted the milestone: “The commercial operation of Andes Solar III is a source of great pride and marks a key milestone in our journey, consolidating our Andes Solar Hub as the largest in Latin America. It also represents the completion of a strategic cycle in our transformation.”
He added: “We continue to advance with the construction of more than 2,000 MW that will begin commercial operations between 2026 and 2027. This clearly demonstrates AES’s confidence in Chile as a strong and competitive platform for renewable energy investment. We will keep contributing efficiently and responsibly to the power system, reaffirming our long-term commitment to sustainable energy development in Chile.”
Renewable energy generated by the Andes Solar Hub is equivalent to the consumption of nearly 800,000 households, making it a key contributor to the decarbonisation of Chile’s National Electric System.
This contribution is further strengthened by transmission infrastructure, with the Andes Substation playing a critical role in northern Chile and serving as the connection point for the only international transmission line between Chile and Argentina (InterAndes).
With this milestone, AES Andes reinforces its commitment to the country’s energy transition, promoting solutions that combine renewable energy and energy storage to move towards a more secure and efficient electricity system.
