Kerala State Electricity Board, an India-based power utility, has limited new domestic solar panel grid connectivity in Kochi because transformer loading in several areas has neared the 90% threshold permitted under existing norms. According to board officials, many consumers with solar systems use less electricity during daytime, so a significant share of surplus generation is being supplied to the utility grid and increasing pressure on local transformers. They said connections beyond the prescribed limit can lead to transformer failure. KSEB has started steps to establish BESS facilities across Kerala, with a 250 MW systems already installed in Kannur and similar facilities planned in other districts, including Ernakulam. However, officials said isolated storage facilities cannot fully resolve the issue. Kochi has been generating around 20% of Kerala’s total solar energy, while industry participants estimated that installations have declined by around 20% in recent months.
