A new solar installation at SSM Health St. Anthony Hospital – Shawnee is turning sunlight into clean energy. What used to be empty land just outside the hospital is now a working solar farm that is helping the hospital do just that.
“It’s good for the environment. We’re in the business of healing patients, and this will definitely help with that,” Lee Martin, regional vice president of facilities and real estate at SSM, said.
The land is now filled with rows of solar panels, turning sunlight into clean, reusable energy for the Shawnee campus. The 1.5-acre solar field doesn’t replace traditional power, but it does reduce how much the hospital relies on it.
“It will definitely help with cutting back that footprint of carbon emissions,” Martin said. “SSM is committed to environmental sustainability. With that, there has been a commitment of cutting emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieving a net-zero emissions by 2050.”

This is the first solar project for SSM Health in Oklahoma. Hospital leaders said it’s a long-term investment in clean energy and healing beyond the hospital walls.
Construction is expected to wrap up by mid-June. The Shawnee location now joins other SSM Health campuses across the country, including Missouri, Illinois and Wisconsin, investing in solar energy.
