US-based solar technology firm Tandem PV said on Tuesday it has opened a commercial demonstration factory in California to scale up production of next-generation perovskite-silicon solar panels for utility projects.
The Fremont facility marks a step towards commercialising domestically manufactured tandem solar modules, as rising electricity demand — driven partly by data centres and artificial intelligence workloads — accelerates the need for new power capacity. The company said the plant would support efforts to reshore advanced solar manufacturing and reduce dependence on overseas supply chains.
The 65,000-square-foot site has an annual nameplate capacity of about 40 megawatts and is designed to demonstrate large-scale manufacturing of tandem panels. The modules produced are significantly larger than earlier research-stage devices and are intended to validate production processes ahead of wider market deployment.
Tandem PV said its technology combines a perovskite layer with conventional silicon cells to capture a broader portion of the solar spectrum, improving energy output from the same footprint. Higher efficiency could help reduce overall project costs, particularly as non-module expenses such as land, labour and balance-of-system components account for a majority of utility-scale solar costs.
The company said its latest panels have achieved 29.7% efficiency in internal testing and show less than 1% average annual power degradation in accelerated lifetime tests. It is targeting operational lifetimes of more than 25 years, in line with industry standards for utility-scale installations.
Chief Executive Scott Wharton said the factory represents a transition from laboratory-scale breakthroughs to commercially viable manufacturing. The Fremont plant has begun producing initial modules, with shipments expected later this year for customer validation. Tandem PV plans to start commercial sales from the facility in 2026 and aims to reach high-volume manufacturing by 2028.
The company will formally inaugurate the site on April 21, with attendees expected to include former U.S. energy secretary Jennifer Granholm and California energy officials.
