REHOBOTH, Mass. (WJAR) — The Rehoboth Board of Selectmen voted Tuesday to remove Fire Chief Mark Haskell after a dispute tied to a solar farm project near his home.
The board voted 4-1 to terminate Haskell, citing conflict of interest and insubordination. The decision came during a public meeting at the Council on Aging building.
Town officials said Haskell continued to speak out against a solar farm on Pond Street while identifying himself as fire chief during public meetings. The property sits next to land owned by Haskell and his family.
Town leaders said that crossed a line. They say once he got involved in discussions about the project, it became a conflict because of his personal stake in the property.
He has more than 30 years with the department and was promoted to chief last fall.
The chairman of the Board of Selectmen said the deputy fire chief will serve as interim chief while the town looks for a replacement.
