Barilla triples its solar power plant and focuses on regenerative agriculture. – lamilano.it

Over the past two years, Barilla has tripled the installed capacity of photovoltaic systems for the self-production of renewable electricity at its Italian production sites, aiming for 24 MWp by 2030.
On Earth Day—the annual event that every April 22nd mobilizes over a billion people in 193 countries to raise awareness of the environmental emergency—Barilla presents the results of its sustainability commitment on two strategic fronts: investment in self-generated solar energy at its Italian plants and the regenerative supply chain model that guides Mulino Bianco’s entire production.

The starting point is already significant: while globally, nearly half of the Group’s electricity consumption (48%) comes from renewable sources, in Italy the goal is even more advanced: the Mulino Bianco, Pan di Stelle, GranCereale, and Barilla Sauces brands use 100% renewable electricity, purchased with Guarantees of Origin or self-generated from its own photovoltaic systems. This is a choice Mulino Bianco has made its own since 2020, sourcing exclusively from hydroelectric power generated by the plant powered by Lake Resia.

To further accelerate this process, Barilla has developed a €168 million Energy & Water Plan, which will be launched in 2024. That year alone, the Group has already invested over €10 million in energy efficiency improvements, the renovation of trigeneration plants, and the installation of new photovoltaic panels, tripling its self-production of renewable electricity at its Italian plants. Among the most notable projects is the 1,5 MWp photovoltaic system at the Rubbiano sauce production plant, which, during the summer months when basil pesto production is peaking, is capable of covering the energy needs of an entire day’s production per week.

The plan calls for the installation of new photovoltaic systems by 2026 at the bakeries in Melfi, Ascoli, and Cremona, and at the pasta factory in Foggia, bringing the total installed capacity to approximately 9 MWp. The 2030 goal is even more ambitious: to reach 24 MW of installed capacity for self-generation from renewable sources. To support this process, all Barilla pasta factories in Italy are already equipped with high-efficiency trigeneration systems, reducing the use of fossil fuels and increasing the energy independence of the spaghetti and co. production.
And that’s not all. Since 2019, the Carta del Mulino—a set of guidelines developed in collaboration with WWF Italy, the University of Bologna, the University of Tuscia, the CNR-IBE, and OpenFields—has guided supplier farmers toward a regenerative agriculture model based on 10 rules that combine product quality, support for rural communities, and protection of agroecosystems.
Specifically, the Carta del Mulino approach includes crop rotation, plant cover during dormant periods, the creation of flowerbeds for pollinating insects, the reduction of pesticides and fertilizers, and the use of digital technologies to monitor impacts. The tangible result of this vision is Buongrano: launched in 2018 as the first product made according to the Carta del Mulino, and returned in 2025, on the occasion of Mulino Bianco’s 50th anniversary, as the first biscuit made with 100% regeneratively sourced soft wheat flour. This iconic product embodies a broader ambition: to produce the entire Mulino Bianco range with regeneratively sourced soft wheat flour by 2030.
