Scientists from Germany-based Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE presented ShadeCut patterned films for photovoltaic modules on April 23, 2026. The films use transparent cutouts to create realistic surface designs such as roof tiles or masonry. The concept works with MorphoColor® coating, which adds color with limited efficiency loss. Researchers said the films can be processed by laser or CAD-controlled cutting methods. The technology can be used on standard PV modules, solar thermal modules, facades and railings. Independent tests showed coated modules delivered about 95 % of the output of comparable uncoated modules. ShadeCut modules were displayed at The Smarter E Europe 2026 / Intersolar Europe 2026.
