Longroad Energy‘s Sun Pond solar-plus-storage facility in Maricopa County, Arizona, has begun commercial operations, the renewable energy independent power producer announced on May 5.
The project, named by its developer Longroad Energy, pairs 111 megawatts of solar photovoltaic generation with an 85-megawatt, 340-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system. Long-term power purchase agreements for the output have been signed with California community choice aggregators Ava Community Energy and San Jose Clean Energy.
Financial close on Sun Pond was disclosed by Longroad in December 2024. At that time, the company noted that McCarthy Building Companies would serve as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor. The battery storage cells were supplied by Japan-based Automotive Energy Supply Corporation, a lithium-ion manufacturer majority owned by Chinese firm Envision Energy.
BESS integrator Fluence, which had recently sourced US-manufactured cells from AESC, joined Longroad and operations and maintenance provider NovaSource Power Services to deliver O&M services for Sun Pond. In the past week, AESC sold its interest in its US lithium-ion battery manufacturing business to US-based Fixx Energy, amid tighter American restrictions on entities perceived as under Chinese government influence.
Longroad specified that Fluence’s Gridstack BESS solution was deployed at Sun Pond. The project also uses photovoltaic modules from First Solar, smart trackers from Nextpower, and solar inverters from Sungrow.
Sun Pond is part of Longroad’s Sun Streams Complex, which includes three additional developments. The entire complex now totals 973 megawatts of solar PV and 600 megawatts, or 2,400 megawatt-hours, of battery storage. Longroad asserts the Sun Streams Complex will generate over $300 million in benefits for Arizona schools and local communities through long-term leases with the Arizona State Land Department and tax payments.
In March 2024, Longroad closed on Serrano, a large-scale solar and storage project in Pinal and Pima Counties, Arizona, also using First Solar PV modules. Prior to that, the company closed on Sun Streams 4, then its largest solar-and-storage project at 377 megawatts PV and 300 megawatts, or 1,200 megawatt-hours of storage, acquired as part of a portfolio from First Solar.
In 2025, Longroad secured a power purchase agreement for its Allium solar-plus-storage project in San Benito County, California, with CCA Marin Clean Energy.
